The longest-serving MP is not standing for re-election. His comments to the BBC about "patronage" and the Whips are highly relevant to the points I have been trying to make here. His comment about MP's with no experience of life outside politics is also relevant, as such people are inevitably more vulnerable to pressure from the Whips - thus undermining Parliament's role as a legislature independent of the executive.
