How bad must things be that the Observer, the "Sunday Pravda" of Britain's Left, should write in such terms? I have to say this leader column hits the nail on the head.

Of late I have detected a growing tendency of the left wing apologensia to go “off message” concerning Government policy. I suspect they are beginning to notice that public opinion is gradually shifting away from Labour, albeit not yet actually “crossing the floor” to the opposition.
